How do you pick your favourite tunes ever?
I tried to compile a Top 100 back in 2001, got the list down to just under 2,000 songs.
Narrowed it down to around 300 based on how many times I had played them, and tracks I loved and knew every note.
The majority were singles or album tracks that I had owned on vinyl, along with some 90's CD's I owned.
Obviously in the days before every tune was available with one click on the internet, it would mean having to put the record on the turntable and sometimes just letting it play multiple times.
Any stand out tracks would then be transferred to cassette tape for playing either in the car or at work.
The CD tracks got multiple plays when I got a car CD player, and due to always working at least an hour from home they would be on the whole way there and back. Sometimes I never changed it for weeks.
Since 2001 I have collected many thousands of tracks on mp3 files, and in most cases anything new gets just one chance to impress. Once in a while they get another play and I realise I missed something really good the first time around.
Something that has happened a lot is hearing a track on TV or a movie soundtrack or even adverts, and thinking "that's a great tune" and checking it out and finding I've had it for many years and it didn't stand out the first time.
So I assume I've got hundreds of songs that would have made my Top list but due to not really paying attention the first time round they get missed.
Also with thousands of new tunes being released every week there is absolutely no chance of ever creating a definitive list.
Currently listening to a couple of compilations from 1980 + 1981 which are brilliant, but 45 years on it's the first time I had ever heard them.
